Wheelhouse docs

Trademarks#

Wheelhouse is built on VyOS and names it plainly, everywhere it matters: on the console banner, on the About page in the web UI, in /etc/os-release, in the source record, and throughout this documentation. Naming a project is not the same as being associated with it. VyOS is a registered trademark of Sentrium S.L., and no affiliation, endorsement, certification or partnership exists between Wheelhouse and the VyOS project. This page sets out the position on that name and on every other name used here.

OwnerSentrium S.L.
Basis for use hereAttribution. The images are self-built from vyos-build and rebranded per upstream's trademark policy, with attribution intact
RelationshipNone. Wheelhouse is not affiliated with, endorsed by, certified by or supported by the VyOS project or Sentrium S.L.
SupportSupport for this product comes from Wheelhouse. Do not ask the VyOS project about it

Both of those last two sentences are on the machine as well as on this page, in /usr/share/doc/wheelhouse/TERMS.txt and /usr/share/doc/wheelhouse/THIRD-PARTY.txtpackaging/iso/branding/doc/TERMS.txt, packaging/iso/branding/doc/THIRD-PARTY.txt.

What the rebranding changes, and what it leaves alone#

The image is not a VyOS release and does not present itself as one. It is also not a VyOS release with the credit stripped out. Both halves of that matter, so both are enumerated — packaging/iso/build-iso.sh, packaging/iso/branding/50-wheelhouse-brand.chroot.

Changed, so the image does not claim to be upstream's:

  • The ISO's application and volume identifiers, and the live image's host name.
  • /etc/os-release: NAME="Wheelhouse", ID=wheelhouse. ID_LIKE="vyos debian" and VYOS_VERSION stay, so monitoring and configuration management can still see what the base is.
  • The boot splash, the boot menus, the pre-login and post-login banners, and the console banner. None of VyOS' artwork is redistributed in the image; the graphics are Wheelhouse's own.
  • /usr/share/vyos/EULA, which a release build fills with VyOS Inc.'s commercial end-user agreement. It is replaced with a symlink to the Wheelhouse terms, so show license prints terms that actually govern what you have.
  • VyOS' Secure Boot MOK certificate is removed from /var/lib/shim-signed/mok. It is a public certificate rather than a key and it is not enrolled in firmware, but it is somebody else's trust anchor and it does not belong on a machine we sell.

Left exactly alone, because it is required or because it is right:

  • Every package's copyright file, and every licence text under /usr/share/common-licenses/.
  • The GPL notices of every component, and the corresponding-source offer that goes with them — Corresponding source.
  • The credit itself: Built on VyOS <version> on the console above every login prompt, the same on the About page in the UI, the base version in /etc/os-release, and the exact vyos-build commit in the source record.

The word "VyOS" is written as upstream writes it, and neither the name nor any upstream mark is restyled, recoloured or incorporated into a Wheelhouse logo.

Other names in this documentation#

Debian, Linux, Podman, Suricata, WireGuard, strongSwan, OpenVPN, FRR, Kea, pdns-recursor, nftables, systemd, Prometheus, Grafana, Authentik, Tailscale, Stripe, OPNsense, pfSense, MikroTik, RouterOS, UniFi and every other product named on this site are the property of their respective owners. They are named here descriptively — to say what software is running, what a page integrates with, or what a reader is migrating from — and no endorsement, affiliation or sponsorship is implied in any direction.

Comparisons with other products describe behaviour, and each one links to the code or the documentation it is drawn from. Where a comparison would need a claim about another product that we cannot check, it is left out.

The Wheelhouse name#

Nothing in the repository establishes a registration, an owner of record or a jurisdiction for the name "Wheelhouse" — <TODO: owner>. A trademark review is listed as a mitigation in the project's own risk register and is scheduled before a public launch, not after it — PLAN.md §11. Until that review has happened, this page states the position as it is rather than asserting rights that have not been checked.
